The Catholic Scholars Guild


WELCOME

The Catholic Scholars Guild (CSG) is an association of scholars and academics that exists for the edification of its members and the building up of the Church. The Guild seeks to provide a collegial, supportive, and cooperative community where faithful Catholic academics can collaborate, be fruitful and serve the mission of the Church.
The guild was formally incorporated with NSW Fair Trading on May 29, 2023. The stated objects of the association are:

  • to promote Catholic thought;
  • to encourage Catholic engagement in the intellectual life; and
  • to encourage Catholic engagement in culture.

Dr Kevin Wagner

President

Kevin is a Senior Lecturer in Theology at the University of Notre Dame, Australia. His primary research and teaching interests are in the fields of Patristics, Church history, Scripture, and Religious Education. He and his wife are currently responsible for the Emmanuel Community (Communauté de l’Emmanuel) in Sydney.

Dr Matthew Tan

Vice President

Matthew is Dean of Studies at Vianney College, the Wagga Wagga campus of the Catholic Institute of Sydney. He is also an Adjunct Senior Lecturer in Theology at the University of Notre Dame Australia. He blogs at “Awkward Asian Theologian.”

Dr Peter J. McGregor

Secretary

Peter is a lecturer in dogmatic theology and spirituality at the Catholic Institute of Sydney, Australia. He has over 35 years of experience in evangelisation, catechesis and religious education. Peter is a member of the Emmanuel Community (Communauté de l’Emmanuel).

Prof. Gerard Ryan

Public Officer

Gerard graduated from the University of Sydney with First Class Honours degrees in Economics and Law and a Masters Degree in Law with Honours. He was admitted as a solicitor in June 1991 and was admitted to partnership in July 2000. He was Dean of the School of Law Sydney from 2008 to 2012 inclusive. He has advised some of the major generators, retailers and network operators in the National Electricity Market, as well as various government and regulatory bodies. Professor Ryan has extensive experience as a speaker at industry seminars and, most significantly, in the recruitment, training and mentoring of young lawyers within the Sydney legal profession.

Rev. Dr Benjamin Johnson OFM. Cap.

Treasurer

Fr Johnson is a Capuchin Franciscan of the Province of Australia. In 2022 he defended his doctorate at the Pontifical Lateran University in Rome on the relationship between the sacraments of the Eucharist and Marriage in the thought of Saint Bonaventure of Bagnoregio. His research interests include the relationship between Franciscan theology and Christian experience, scholastic theology and contemporary sacramental theology.

The Most Reverend Archbishop Anthony Fisher, O.p.


Archbishop Fisher is the Archbishop of Sydney. He is Chancellor of the Catholic Institute of Sydney and a Member of the Company, Senator, and Chair of the Board of Identity of the Australian Catholic University. He has published extensively in bioethics, moral theology, history, law and spirituality.

Upcoming Events

The Catholic Scholars Guild is happy to promote events of interest to its members. Members of the CSG are encouraged to use this as a forum to promote upcoming events and activities. Please send any items you would like to include on the notice board to catholicscholars.au@gmail.com.


  • Men’s Breakfasts

    The Guild organises Men’s Breakfasts every two months. These currently take place at Benito’s Cafe, at the University of Notre Dame, Australia.
